TOEFL/IELTS
If your first language is not English, you must certify proficiency in English when you apply to UCLA. If you are admitted, you may also be required to confirm your proficiency upon starting the program. This applies to U.S. citizens and permanent residents as well as international applicants.
To certify your proficiency, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) exam.
Please note that TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for only two years. The scores must be valid at the time you submit your application. If you took the exam multiple times, only the most recent score is considered.
Note: If you studied at a satellite campus located in a country where English is not the primary spoken language of daily life, you will need to submit recent TOEFL or IELTS scores.
TOEFL Scores
TOEFL may be submitted as part of the online application or sent by the testing service directly to the MSOL program office. The institution code for UCLA is 4837.
UCLA does not currently accept MyBest TOEFL scores. The minimum required score on the paper and pencil test must be at least 560 or at least 87 on the internet-based test. For the internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT), the following are the expected scores* for each section:
- Writing – 25
- Speaking – 24
- Reading – 21
- Listening – 17
*Please note that these expected section scores help us to evaluate your English language ability in different areas. Your application is not complete without the test scores.
IELTS Scores
IELTS scores should be sent by the testing service directly to the MSOL program office and the Graduate Division.
The minimum required overall score on the IELTS should be at least 7.0.
Transcripts
When completing the online application, you should upload unofficial transcripts from all academic institutions attended.
If you are admitted to UCLA, you must submit official academic records from all academic institutions attended. These are defined as original documents issued by the institution — not photocopies — which bear the registrar’s signature and the seal of the issuing institution.
Instructions and deadlines for submission are included with official offers of admission. New graduate students should submit official records in the original language with a complete, authorized English translation.
If you have attended more than one institution, each one should submit separate official records.
Please note submitted records become the university’s property, and we cannot return them to you. If your academic record cannot be replaced, keep the original for yourself and obtain a certified copy. Never send a document to UCLA that cannot be replaced.
